Speed Dating

Couple out on date

In this age of fast and furious dating and mating, speed dating is way of meeting people that is gaining in popularity.  According to Wikipedia, its origins are credited to Rabbi Yaacov Deyo of Aish HaTorah, originally as a way to help Jewish singles meet and marry, and the first speed dating event took place in 1998.

What’s To Like:

  • You can meet a large number of people in a relatively short period of time
  • The participants are set up by an organizer (individual or company)
  • The organizer rings a bell, blows a whistle, or has another way to signal the end of the “date”
  • Contact information is not traded during the meeting, but submitted to the organizer if there is an interest

What’s To Dislike:

  • Advanced registration with a credit card is required
  • First dates need to be longer than 3-8 minutes, even to see if there is potential for a future date
  • Due to limited time, the “dates” can seem more like interviews with little “down time” for people to be themselves
  • If you are the only African American speed dater, it could be awkward
  • Most of the interest is based on first impressions, not the content of the individual person
  • Five minutes can be a long time with a stranger that you have no initial connection with
  • Unless the individuals are already screened as potential matches, there is lack of matchmaking science and the approach is more random
  • There is little evidence that it leads to successful, long-term relationships
